Almost entirely below the surface

This €280-million project involved the construction of the suburban rail line between Málaga and Fuengirola.

The Los Prados - Airport section runs almost entirely below the surface, crossing the Guadalhorce River and Málaga Airport’s new runway. The precast concrete lining is comprised of concrete rings made up of seven segments, giving a finished tunnel diameter of 9 metres.

ACCIONA presented this project with one of its annual Project Management Awards recognizing excellence in different areas related to quality, environment, occupational risk prevention, technology, etc. The awards include Best Prevention Management, Best Quality and Environmental Management, Best R&D Technology Implementation, Best Innovative Action and, Best Project Management, the latter of which is the main award that draws from all of the other categories.

This work has also been awarded in the 4th edition of the Potencia Awards 2010, for the best work and project in the category of tunnels.
